Grandad

submitted by Bundles

Our grandfather (mother's dad) died in 2002 and living in Papua New Guinea, there was a big ceremony and after all of that was over, we could hear him around the place and feel his presence.

Our grandad had many grandchildren and we all loved him and were as close as any grandchildren could be. Since my mother was his eldest child, she had a dream shortly after all the ceremonies were finished- he appeared in her dream and gave her a pearl necklace. In the morning, she looked in her dream dictionary and 'pearls' meant love or something really deep-it all made sense- he wanted to tell her that.

My mother also heard noises in our house. Once, she was walking up the stairs and there was a voice in the house so she was calling out our names, thinking we were in the house, but no-one answered and no-one was in the house. My mother wasn't the only one that experienced my grandad's presence. My cousin, when sleeping over at my house was on a mattress near the door so that her feet were facing the door. For some reason, she woke up in the middle of the night and there was a shadow of a person in the doorway of the room. Her whole body felt heavy- she could only watch. The person soon walked to my brother's room nearby. Another cousin of mine, bless her, was very young and she was sleeping on the same mattress near the door and she woke me up in the late night and told me she was hearing voices and was really scared so I told her to share my bed.

Another encounter was when my mother's friend visited from Australia. She was close to my grandad and when she arrived at our house, she felt guilty that she didn't visit my grandad's grave before she went to sleep in my sister's bed. My bed was nearby- in the same room and in the dead of the night, I woke up to her troubled voice saying (in her sleep): "Devil, devil, go away!" I was terrified and naturally thought there was a devil in the room so I called out to my mother- a technique I thought I'd never use again after passing the age of 7, and she came in, woke up her friend and went outside to have tea in the darkness of the night- all three of us and there she told us that there was someone in the doorway and he was leaning in, trying to see who was sleeping in my sister's bed. Of course that was grandad. Who else would it be? All of the cases were our grandad because that was how he was.

When I pass the lounge, I say "goodnight bubu daddy (that's what we call our grandfathers)" because that was where he spent his last days- in our lounge, looking out the big window to the sea.
